The 5th ATN Conference took place at the IEE in London on 23-24 September 2003. There were 185 registered delegates from 38 countries, of which 169 attended at least one day of the conference. The conference was sponsored by SITA and ACI, and supported by IATA. Janes Airport Review was the official publication.
The Conference CDROM containing all presentations and a full audio recording of the conference is now available for purchase online.
The conference was preceded by a one day tutorial on 22 September 2003.
There was also a free seminar provided by SITA on their products and services, and which ran in parallel to the tutorial.
In Europe, this year has seen solid progress in the deployment of ATN/CPDLC, and a major focus of the conference was on Eurocontrol's Link2000+ Programme. Lufthansa and SAS have formally signed agreements with Eurocontrol to equip aircraft with the new technology and rollout is timetabled for the core European Area.
The conference examined the programme's intent to provide first incentives for the use of CPDLC and then to mandate the use of CPDLC, probably by the end of the decade. A Panel Discussion gave delegates a chance to quiz the Eurocontrol team on both the planned incentives and mandate. As is often the case, this proved to be one of the most popular parts of the conference.
In North America, the FAA remains committed to their Build 1 Miami CPDLC service. However, there is currently uncertainty over the next steps. The FAA is re-assessing its options for the next stage and particularly how the NEXCOM (VDL3) and CPDLC Programmes work together. There was much criticism raised at the conference concerning the FAA's current limited commitment to CPDLC.
There were also sessions on CNS/ATM developments around the world, including AsiaPAC, the Middle East and the North Atlantic.
