Andrew Shand, British Airways

Andrew Shand is currently: Manager ATC Performance & Projects at British Airways. He joined British Airways in 1979 as Engineering Apprentice leading to BSc Air Transport Engineering from City University. He then worked as a Development Engineer in Flight Data Recording and 737/1-11/777 Avionics (responsible for Nav & Comm) during which time chaired AEEC 755 (MMR) sub-committee from start to grey cover. He was based in USA for 4 years as BA delivery manager 777 and subsequently in California on IFE programmes. He joined Flight Ops in 1999 responsible for ATC performance and ATM strategy for BA and is a member of the IATA DLFTF.

Steve Zaidman, FAA

Steve Zaidman is the Associate Administrator for Research and Acquisitions at the FAA. He has been at FAA since 1974. He was formerly Director of the FAA's Systems Engineering Office and has also held positions in FAA's Internal Aviation Office, Director of FAA's Operations Research Office and Manager in FAA's Policy and Plans Office. He holds Masters of Science Degree in Operations Research awarded by the George Washington University.

Günther Matschnigg, IATA

Günther Matschnigg is the Vice President, Operations & Infrastructure, IATA Prior to joining IATA as Vice President, Operations & Infrastructure in September 1999 Günther Matschnigg was Vice President Maintenance Organisation Austrian Airlines for almost 4 years. Prior to that he was Deputy Head of Technical and Operational Affairs in the Federal Ministry of Transport for a period of 15 years. He is a member of the JAA Maintenance and JAA-Joint Maintenance Committees. He holds an ICAO Type Maintenance Engineer Licence with ratings A340, A320, B767, B737, F70 as well as a Commercial Pilots Licence.

Geoff Bailey

After being awarded an honours degree in Electronic Engineering, Geoff Bailey became a system designer of automatic landing systems for civil aircraft. In 1971 he joined the UK Civil Aviation Authority where he was closely involved with the development of the Microwave Landing System. Following some two years in charge of air traffic systems at Gatwick Airport, he attended the Joint Services Defence College. He spent two years as Head of Aerodrome Projects before joining the International Air Transport Association in Geneva. He was involved with data automation, and then financial services, before moving to the Aero-political domain. He was recruited by EUROCONTROL in December 1995. Today he is Head of the Communications Unit and has responsibility for all aspects of communications including spectrum and frequency management issues.

Gary Colledge, UK NATS

Gary Colledge, NATS Ltd Gary Colledge has worked in the field of datalink development since joining NATS in 1989. The emphasis of his work has been the implementation and evaluation of trials systems and simulators, these range from the VHF Oceanic Clearance Message delivery system, through Mode S trials, ADS/CPDLC simulation, to the integration and performance analysis of the ADS Europe system. In 1997 he was appointed as the NATS EOLIA Project Manager and is now responsible for Applications and Systems projects within the department of Technical Research and Development.

Mark Green, UK NATS

Mark Green joined NATS in 1997, since then he has been involved in datalink related work, including simulations exploring the use of ADS & CPDLC on the North Atlantic, EOLIA evaluation activities, and more recently Air Derived Data studies and trials. Prior to joining NATS, Mark trained and worked as an En-route controller at the Maastricht UAC. He has also worked on avionics projects, examining the emulation of Flight Management Systems.

Forrest Colliver, ACI

Forrest Colliver, as general manager of ACI, is responsible for the marketing and development of certifiable ATN portable software that will be the basis of the first generation of operational avionics and ground ATN systems. Forrest has had extensive experience in the development and validation of the ICAO and industry related ATN standards.

Rob Mead, EUROCONTROL

Since 1990, following ten years experience as operational RC-135 aircrew and an operations analyst in the United States Air Force, Rob Mead has been involved in the development of ground/ground and air/ground data communications for ATS. Rob is the Manager of the Eurocontrol Petal II trial.A

Jim Williams, FAA

In March of 2000, Mr. Williams was selected to lead the FAA Communications Integrated Product Team (IPT). This team has the responsibility to develop, procure, and install all air/ground communications services for the FAA. Specific programs currently in process are: Voice Switching Modernization and Expansion, Voice Recorder Modernization, Air/Ground Voice System Sustainment and Expansion, Next Generation Air/Ground Communications Services, and Aeronautical Data Link Communications.

René Esser, Airsys ATM

Programme manager with Airsys ATM, France for ATS data link applications in Europe and overseas (May 1998 to present). Project leader for international Operational and R&D projects concerning data message exchanges over future air/ground data communication means (like FANS & ATN), and the application of them in ground ATC systems. Before working with Airsys ATM, René has been for over five years a project manager and system engineer with the Netherlands National Aerospace Laboratory NLR, at the Air Traffic Management Department.

Thomas Fixy, Airbus

Thomas has worked as a Senior Engineer Cockpit Avionics with Airbus Industrie since 1999, on FANS implementation in Airbus aircraft Previsously, he was with British Airways in Avionics Enginneering Technical Services and at the Aerospatiale Design Office for CNS/ATM R&D projects,.

Robert B. Kerr, Honeywell

Manager, CNS/ATM Business Development, Honeywell (Phoenix, Arizona).

Bob Kerr has worked in the avionics industry since 1979, and during this time has been involved in the development of Flight Management systems for several commercial aircraft types, TCAS and Mode-S transponders, and the Data Link system for the Boeing 777.Most recently, he has been Honeywell’s Management representative in the ACI LLC Joint Venture, involved in the development of the ATN protocols and applications software. He continues to be closely involved with the deployment of the ATN within Honeywell and ACI.

Robert Peake, Air Services Australia

Bob Peake has more than thirty years experience on air traffic control, radar and control centre projects with Airservices Australia, the Australian air traffic service provider. He is the project manager for the implementation of The Australian Advanced Air Traffic System (TAAATS). TAAATS replaced Australia's entire air traffic control system with a new system which integrates Automatic Dependent Surveillance and Controller Pilot Datalink Communications facilities with advanced Flight Data Processing and Radar Data Processing.

Thomas W. Holford

Thomas W. Holford is currently the United Airlines FANS-1 Implementation Team Leader and a member of the United Airlines FANS Management Team. He holds a Bachelor or Arts from the University of Colorado ('67) and a Master of Science from the University of Southern California ('71). A U. S. Naval Aviator, Thomas has ten years at the United Flight Center including training management for the B-747-400, B-757/676 & B-777 Fleets and New Technology Issues.

Martin Cole, NATCA

Martin Cole is the U.S. NATCA National Representative for Datalink (National Air Traffic Controllers Association). He is also a member of the International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers’ Associations, Standing Committee 1, ( technical advisory committee). Martin is currently an Enroute (Area) controller at Washington ARTCC (Air Route Traffic Control Center). He previously held the position of the IFATCA Executive Vice President – Technical (International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers’ Associations).

Steve Zerkowitz, IATA

Steve Zerkowitz served as an air traffic controller for 18 years and has ratings in aerodrome control, approach and area radar, instructor and examiner. Steve has 3 years with ICAO in Paris as Technical Officer RAC/SAR, 9 Years on the design team of the AAA system in Amsterdam, as process specialist, flight data processing system. Steve has represented the Netherlands on numerous international meetings at EUROCONTROL. Steve joined IATA 4 years ago and is responsible for advanced concepts, controller tools and air/ground integration.

Philip Clinch, SITA

Philip Clinch is Director Air Traffic Services in the SITA Aircraft Services unit, with responsibility for developing the use of the SITA AIRCOM network by Air Traffic Service providers for CNS/ATM data link applications. He has worked for SITA since 1988 on VHF data link systems. He contributed to the airline industry standards for the ACARS data link system and its use for FANS-1/A ADS and CPDLC and the ICAO standard for the VHF Digital Link (VDL).

Frank O’Connor, Airtel

Frank O'Connor is VP Marketing and a founder of Airtel ATN. He has worked in the software industry for the past 25 years having graduated from University College Dublin with a B.Sc. degree in Computer Science and Mathematics. His career has involved him in senior technical and managerial roles in a wide variety of software industries sectors. He has been involved in ATN software developments since 1993 and managed the engineering group which developed a trials ATN router for Eurocontrol.

John Coulson, UK NATS

John Coulson is a Senior Systems Engineer with UK National Air Traffic Services Ltd. He joined NATS in 1991 from Ferranti International in Bracknell and currently works in the Infrastructure Services Directorate at Gatwick. He previously acted as NATS Deputy Project Manager for the ADS Europe trials and is now responsible for project management of the pre-operational ADS Waypoint Reporting trials in the Shanwick Oceanic Control Area in the North Atlantic. He is also involved in Eurocontrol ADS activities.

Derek McLauchlan, CANSO

Derek McLauchlan is the Secretary General of CANSO. He has a career-long interest in the application of new technologies to products and in the management of programmes to achieve this. He became the first Secretary General of the new Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation in January 1998. Mr. McLauchlan worked for the National Air Traffic Services in the United Kingdom from 1989-1997 and was its first Chief Executive for six years until his retirement. Before entering this field, he was Engineering Director of ICL, the UK computer company, for thirteen years. This followed ten years working on the design and manufacture of satellites at the European Space Technology Centre in The Netherlands and then as General Manager for satellite activities at Marconi Space and Defence Systems.

Karen N Gielsen, The Boeing Company

Karen Gielen is responsible for development and implementation of international regulatory strategy to enable the provision of satellite communications services to airborne and other mobile platforms, including spectrum allocation and licensing. In this capacity, Karen has participated as a member of US delegations to International Telecommunications Union meetings, including the recent World Radiocommunication Conference in Istanbul, Turkey. In her 22 years at Boeing, Karen has held a broad array of assignments, both in the Commercial Airplane and and Space & Communications Groups. Prior to assuming her current assingment in 1997, Karen served as CNS/ATM Programs Manager.
